Salivary Bypass

The Montgomery Salivary Bypass Tube serves a critical role in the stent repair of cervical esophageal and hypopharyngeal strictures, effectively preventing the formation of fistulae or aiding in their management arising from various causes such as surgery, radiation, advanced malignancies, trauma, and the ingestion of caustic substances.

One of the significant challenges in healing tissues affected by surgery, infections, or radiation therapy is the constant exposure to saliva. This exposure can impede the healing process and prolong fistula closure. The design of the Montgomery Salivary Bypass Tube is specifically intended to redirect saliva to the distal esophagus, thereby promoting the spontaneous closure of fistulae. As a result, the surrounding tissue may recover adequately, facilitating the potential for more complex reconstruction techniques, such as using pedicled skin flap tissue.

Furthermore, a feeding tube can be conveniently inserted through the salivary bypass tube. This placement not only helps in preventing impending fistulae and strictures but can also be beneficial when employed after bougienage dilation, underscoring its versatile functionality in managing esophageal and hypopharyngeal complications.
